Starting a Conversation

With a Master's degree in biomedical sciences, I went to work in the pharmaceutical industry, where I started in sales and marketing and then moved into medical writing. I then broadened my work by becoming a science writer for an international astronomical observatory. Now as a freelance writer, I enjoy a variety of subjects and outlets. Each assignment is a conversation with a unique audience.

Making It Happen
How did I become a freelance writer? Initially, I devoted three months to developing a realistic business plan with support from my local Small Business Development Center that I continue to update and use as my guide. For additional details on business plan development, please view my article entitled "Navigating to Success" that was published in February 2007.

The most successful freelance writers typically transition from full-time employment to self-employment over a period of a few years. Other freelance writers, such as professional scientists or clinicians, maintain another career while writing. However you decide to write, it takes time to develop a network of clients and collaborators.

Early on, I received sound advice:
  • Practice writing and ask for feedback. There are many media outlets available to get started.
  • Save as much money as you can before going freelance.
  • Create a business plan and refer to it.
  • Cut difficult clients loose.
  • Give compatible clients your focused attention and best work.

    What Clients Say
"We are reluctant to say too many good things about Ms Bjorn, for fear of losing our ability to work with her on a regular basis. To be a bit less selfish, we have to admit that working with Genevive is an experience that transcends the normal agency/consultant relationship. We consider Genevive to be part of the agency, even if she does live in Hawaii and not Boston. Her passion for advancing the field of women's health shows in her writing, much of which goes into our educational programs for physicians and other health care providers. We're all looking for ways to balance our lives with our work. Collaborating with Genevive helps keep us on track."

    Lifelong Learning
To further my committment to the writing profession, I actively participate in the continuing education program offered by the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA). I am currently pursuing their professional development and advanced certificates. Interested parties may review my qualifications and publications upon request by contacting me.
