How did I become a freelance writer? Initially, I devoted three months to developing a realistic business plan with support from my local Small Business Development Center that I continue to update and use as my guide. The most successful freelance writers typically transition from full-time employment to self-employment over a period of a few years. Other freelance writers, such as professional scientists or clinicians, maintain another career while writing. However you decide to write, it takes time to develop a network of clients and collaborators. Early on, I received sound advice: Practice writing and ask for feedback. There are many media outlets available to get started. Save as much money as you can before going freelance. Create a business plan and refer to it. Cut difficult clients loose. Give compatible clients your focused attention and best work.
